YouTube Access Requirements

Darlington County School District
YouTube Access Requirements for High School Students

We recognize that YouTube is a powerful resource for educational content. The site is home to over 10 million videos tagged as educational, many of them submitted by teachers.

We also recognize that there is a lot of content available through YouTube that is not educational in nature and that our students must be trained to be responsible contributors and consumers of this media.

We are proposing that we open YouTube, for high school students only,by having them authenticate themselves through logging in using their district credentials. Requiring authentication allows us to monitor and track each student’s use of this resource.

Before access to YouTube is made available to a student, the following criteria must be met:

  1. Successful completion of the YouTube Access Course in Schoology.

  2. No parental optout form has been received.

The YouTube Access Course is one component of our Digital Citizenship Curriculum and will include information on the following:

  • ●  Staying Safe

  • ●  Appropriate Conduct (viewing, commenting, creating, sharing, etc.)

  • ●  Copyright Issues

  • ●  Building a Positive Digital Footprint

Successful completion of the assessment at the end of the course will meet the criteria to grant access.

    INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

It is our goal to help our students become responsible contributors and consumers of this resource.

However, we do recognize that some parents may prefer that their students not have access to it. In these situations, students will need to be sure to communicate with their teacher(s) to insure that instructional materials are accessed through alternative means.

  • ●  Parents will be notified of the optout option through the following communication tools:

  • ●  Paper forms will be sent home with students the week of September 13th.

  • ●  School Connects calls and emails.

  • ●  Forms will be available in the Parent Section on the District website (http://www.darlington.k12.sc.us).

Parents will be able to optout at any time and the student’s name will be removed from the access list within 48 business hours.

On ???, YouTube will be opened for students who have met the two criteria above.

All students in grades 9-12 must complete the responsible use of YouTube training, preferably by ???. After this date, students will be added to the list within 24 hours of course completion (provided no parental opt-out form has been received).
