December Teacher Feature
Congratulations to Mr. Cole Davis!!
 Mr. Davis teaches Band, Chorus, and Piano to our Mayo students and is the director for our Phoenix Phame and 405 performance groups.  

The Darlington County School District's Teachers Forum announced recently the December Teacher Feature winners.  The program recognizes one teacher from each school to honor excellence in education.  The purpose of the Teacher Forum is to foster professional growth and teacher leadership.  The Teacher Feature Program is sponsored by the Better Homes and Gardens Segars Realty.  Honorees receive free meals at local restaurants and recognition at their school.

Key to the City

On Tuesday evening, December 3, our very own SRO Lt. Steve Buffkin was recgonized by the Darlington City Council with the Key to the City for his 41 years of service to Darlington County.  Congratulations Lt. Buffkin!!

Eastern District Honor Band
On Monday, December 2 several of our Mayo band students attended auditions for the Eastern District Honor Bands at Hartsville Middle School.  Congratulations to Mr. Cole Davis and the following students!

Pee Dee Math Tournament

On Tuesday, December 3 Mrs. Vonda Baker traveled with a group of Mayo's finest math students to compete in the Pee Dee Math Tournament at Frances Marion University and they had a great day!

They were eligible to go on stage for the final round of competitions and Eli Hellmig was recognized for being the highest scorer for Mayo.

On Tuesday, December 3, Mrs. Ruth Taylor's Chemistry classes had a visitor.  Dr. Bob Bowen, Director of Recruitment for all Engineering Departments at Clemson University, spoke with the Honors Chemistry students today in Mrs. Ruth Taylor's class.  He brought engineering ideas to life, like a sound waver in fire and artificial vein structures from sodium alginate and calcium chloride. 


In recognition of Admiral Grace Hopper's birthday on December 9, there is a worldwide movement to promote computer science and demystify coding during Computer Science Education Week.  On Thursday, December 5, the Mayo teachers and students worked on Hour of Code projects in their classrooms.

Mrs. Ruth Taylor's Chemistry classes worked on Professor Photon's Color Conundrum in which the students worked on an escape room scenario.  It was pretty fun and had lots of binary code.

Ms. Charissa Lannan's classes have been working on coding webpages in HTML and CSS.  But on also took a day to explore individual coding activities on the website.

On Friday, December 6 the Mayo Student Council sponsored the Winter Blood Drive.  Wow!  We kept the American Red Cross staff going non-stop with the largest number of potential donors registered in our 15 years of doing the blood drive.  Thank you to all the students, alumni, faculty, parents, and other community members who donated in our Winter Blood Drive.  Because of your contributions, we were able to impact over 100 lives by collecting 36 usable pints of blood!

Our next blood drive will be in March, please join us!  Thank you!

On Saturday, December 7 Mayo hosted the First Tech Challenge Robotics Competition for Pee Dee League No. 2.  The Mayo Team finished in Second Place!  There were six teams competing, including our very own Phoenix Phorge team.  Way to go, Mr. Cook and our Robotics Team!  Special thanks to Mrs. Nancy Fletcher and the Academic Challenge Team for providing the concessions.

Van Gogh
On Monday, December 9, Mrs. Lyn O'Donnell's Art 2, 3, 4, AP-Art History, and National Art Honor Society members traveled to the Columbia Museum of Art to see the traveling exhibition 'Van Gogh and His Inspirations'.  On the way to Columbia they stopped in Bishopville to see Pearl Fryer's Topiary Gardens.

Academic Challenge Team vs. Marlboro
On Wednesday, December 11 our Academic Challenge team traveled to Marlboro County High School. The final score was Marlboro 18 - Mayo 19.  Congratulations to Mayo!  Thank you to the advisers Mrs. Nancy Fletcher and Mrs. Sharon Cox.  Thank you to Ms. Charissa Lannan for filling in as a judge.

Academic Challenge Team vs. Central Pageland
On Wednesday, December 18 our Academic Challenge team played against Central Pageland High School.  The final score was Mayo 21 - Central Pageland 20.  Congratulations Mayo!  Thank you to the advisers Mrs. Nancy Fletcher and Mrs. Sharon Cox.  Thank you to Ms. Paulette Lunn for being our lovely host.  Thank you to Mrs. Carol Ross for being our official scorekeeper. Thank you to Mrs. Lyn O'Donnell, Mrs. Dawn Taylor and Ms. Charissa Lannan for being judges.
